The Master Teacher Fellowship is a two-year faculty development program aimed at medical educators to provide leadership around creating competency-based education in medical schools, and community- and university-based residencies.
This full-time, onsite fellowship focuses on developing effective teaching skills, competency-based curriculum development, virtual learning, creation of the patient-centered medical home, and the practice and teaching of information mastery.
The Fellowship also incorporates a Masters in Medical Education via distance learning from the University of Dundee, Scotland, an international leader in medical education innovation.
Coursework
The Masters coursework consists of assignments and projects in five core areas:
- Teaching and learning
- Curriculum planning
- Principles of assessment
- Education management and leadership
- Medical Education research
In addition, Fellows may pick a number of optional areas for exploration and learning, including:
- E-learning
- Educational support
- Clinical teaching
- Teaching clinical reasoning
- Curriculum development and evaluation
- Work-based assessment
- Teaching professional identity formation
Time Allotment
All Fellows will maintain a clinical practice in our CHA Malden Care Center, working alongside residents and faculty members. Fellows spend approximately 30% of their time in clinical practice, with the balance of their time spent in teaching and learning activities.

Clinical teaching consists of precepting residents and students, supervised at first, and then independently. Fellows also have the opportunity to provide formal lectures and small group teaching of residents and students.
Clinical practice includes a patient panel and inpatient teaching.
The Fellows weekly seminars are coordinated with the Masters of Medical Education curriculum. A typical seminar starts with a facilitated discussion of that week's Masters chapter. The second half of the seminar focuses on other educational topics not covered in the Masters program, such as information mastery, media training, and others. The third hour is a work session on a curriculum innovation, project development, presentation preparation, and other practical issues.
